I install Bellami and Harper Ellis extensions in hand-tied, K-tip, tinsel, clip-in, and halo methods, and the number one question I get after an install is simple: how do I take care of them? The good news is that extensions are easier to care for than most people expect. Here is the routine I share with every client who sits in my chair.
Brush Gently, Twice a Day
The most important habit is brushing. I recommend a soft-bristle or loop-bristle extension brush, and I always tell clients to brush twice a day, morning and night. Start at the ends and work your way up in small sections, holding the hair just above where the extension is attached so you don't pull on the bond or bead. Never yank a tangle through from the roots.
Wash Less, Condition More
Extensions don't need to be washed as often as your natural hair does. Washing every two to three days is plenty for most people. When you do wash, use a sulfate-free shampoo and focus it on the scalp and roots, letting the suds rinse through the lengths. Then apply a good conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends, and leave it on for a couple of minutes before rinsing. This keeps the hair soft and the bonds happy.
Skip the Heat When You Can
Heat is the fastest way to shorten the life of any extension. If you use a blow dryer, flat iron, or curling iron, always apply a heat protectant first and keep the temperature on the lower side. And try to let your hair air dry whenever you have the time. Your extensions will stay shinier and last longer.
Sleep With Your Hair Protected
A simple change that makes a big difference: braid your hair loosely or pull it into a low, loose ponytail before bed, and sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase. It reduces friction, which means fewer tangles, less frizz, and less stress on the bonds while you sleep.
Come Back for Maintenance
Extensions grow out with your hair, so they need regular maintenance to stay comfortable and natural-looking. Depending on the method, I have clients come back every six to eight weeks to have the bonds moved up as their hair grows. It keeps the install feeling brand new and protects your natural hair in the long run.
Extensions are an investment in how you feel, and a little daily care goes a long way. If you have extensions and something feels off, or you're thinking about getting them for the first time, text me. I'm happy to talk through what would work best for your hair.
