Healthy, glossy blonde hair in soft waves

Living in the Pacific Northwest means our hair faces a very specific set of challenges in winter: rain that tests your color, humidity that brings out frizz, and dry indoor heat that leaves hair feeling brittle. After 30+ years behind the chair in Camas, I've learned exactly what works. Here is the winter routine I recommend to my clients.

Moisture Is the Whole Game

Winter air is dry, and dry hair is fragile hair. The single best thing you can do is add moisture back in. Swap in a richer conditioner, and add a weekly deep-conditioning mask. I tell my color clients to think of it like moisturizing your skin: a little extra care in the cold months keeps everything soft and healthy.

Turn Down the Heat

Between the cold outdoors and the warm indoors, our hair gets a lot of temperature swings. When you style, use the lowest heat setting that gets the job done and always apply a heat protectant first. If you can, let your hair air dry a few days a week. Your strands will thank you.

Protect Your Color From the Rain

Rain is hard on color, especially lighter or fashion shades. A good color-safe, sulfate-free shampoo makes a real difference, and a gloss or toner appointment can revive faded color between visits. If you're going to be out in the rain a lot, a lightweight leave-in or styling oil adds a protective layer and keeps frizz at bay.

Beat the Static

Static is one of the most common winter complaints I hear. Dry indoor heat is the culprit. A tiny bit of leave-in conditioner or a drop of hair oil smoothed over the surface of your hair will calm flyaways in seconds. I also recommend a boar-bristle brush, which distributes your hair's natural oils and helps cut down on static.

Don't Skip Your Appointments

Winter is the season when hair tends to look its dullest, so regular trims and conditioning treatments matter more, not less. A trim keeps split ends from traveling, and a deep-conditioning or bond-building treatment in the salon gives your hair a strong, healthy start to the season.

Winter doesn't have to be your hair's worst season. With a little moisture, a little less heat, and the right products, you can keep it soft, shiny, and healthy all the way to spring. If your hair is feeling dry or dull, book an appointment and we'll get it back on track.
